Reclaimed Spaces

She remembered many trips with her mother to the old butcher shop as a kid; the salty, pungent smell of aged meat and blood mixed with sawdust is an odor one does not easily forget, especially one whose gentle nature informed her conscience early in life that it was a cruel and barbaric practice to eat other living, breathing creatures.

Years later, after completing culinary school, she returned home, purchased the old storefront and reclaimed the space for a restaurant specializing in vegan fare.

She kept the neon sign as a novelty and called her place “Fresh Meets”.

…It’s How You Play the Game

Plenty of parents hated Joe and thought nothing of letting him know right to his face, in no uncertain terms, that he was the worst coach in the league.

The Little Monsters hadn’t won a game all season; even worse they hadn’t even scored a run, not one.

But I saw a different side to Joe, and came to appreciate him all the more because my kid came home from every game, not sad that they had lost, but happy and proud that he had played his best and because he’d had fun.

People often said, “when god created Louise, he threw away the mold.”

She refused to be one of those vanilla “good wives”, always deferring to their husbands, meeting them at the door, impeccably groomed, with slippers and a stiff drink; dinner on the table, and Joe knew it when he married her.

But their’s was a match made in heaven because Joe was quite evolved, cut from his own unique mold, and he loved Louise’s rough edges; that she had a mind and wasn’t afraid to use it.

Following the Crowd
The charismatic leader called for volunteers and a whole host of willing followers raised their hand to be counted.

But it was not clear what they were volunteering for, as evidenced by the mumbling that rumbled from the crowd, “What are we raising our hands for?”, “Did you hear the first part of the call?”, “I’m not sure…I just don’t want to be left behind.”

“Round them all up and take them to the holding cell,” the speaker proclaimed to his armed guards with a sinister smile, “our alien guests will be pleased with the variety of our menu!”

Lost and Found – a Three Line Tale

Lost and Found

They had searched frantically for hours when a member of the team found Emily’s teddy bear hanging vicariously over the murky water from the railing of the shuttered bridge.

The authorities kept her mother far from the site, offering her coffee in an attempt to protect her from the awful truth, while the sergeant called for the aquatic search team.

As onlookers gathered to watch, the mother, clinging to her baby girl’s teddy bear at the perimeter of the horrible spectacle was jolted from her sobbing by a gentle tug on her coat sleeve, “Mommy, you found my Boo Bears…I been lookin’ eberwheres for him.”
