Sunday’s Week in Reverse – 9 September 2018

It’s just words. Sticks and stones…but words…oh yes, words, silly words, how they bless, affirm, empower, indict, illuminate, question, and reveal the very heart and core of us. A slip of the tongue can show us who someone really is. A stroke of the pen, when scrolled in earnest, with excruciating honesty can prick our hearts and move our souls.

I am a writer. I write what I know and feel and am. If not with transparency, then, why bother. Oh I dip my toe into fiction every now and again, but if you read between the lines, I am there, pouring out the words that manifest in my head begging, sometimes screaming to be said. It is no use second guessing the words, razor edged, poignant, magnificent, that must be said. Too much? Too soon? Too revealing? To scathing? Too real? The moment I start censoring myself is the moment I cease to become me. And no one is suggesting that. Well, some are, but I say to those naysayers, be damned.

It’s just words…indeed! Words are everything I’ve learned. Beautiful excruciating words. And I am a writer above all other labels and titles; above all the roles assigned to me: daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, executive assistant, activist, friend. If you really want to know me, read my words. The painful, the snarky, the funny, the heartfelt musings, whisperings. They are not just words. They are everything. They will not be silenced. I will not be silenced. I am a writer.

Sunday’s Week in Reverse – 9 September 2018

down, down, behind the lace arbor
I am a writer
should be obvious
whoever said “blondes have fun” lied
celebrate those who toil
you can be strong
take care not to linger there
oh god
we’re in for bad weather
crank the cogs to squeeze out a dime
close your eyes now
global warming’s a hoax
right…there is no unless
soul whisperers who bear witness
in a spirit of love
desire for what could be

A ReVerse poem is a summary poem with a single line lifted from each entry of a collection of work over a particular timeframe and re-penned in chronological order as a new poem. Unlike a collaborative poem, the ReVerse features the words of one writer, providing a glimpse into their thoughts over time. I use it as a review of the previous week.

Sunday’s Week in ReVerse – 2 September 2018

Today’s ReVerse speaks to me of resilience and perseverance. In looking back at my ancestors last month I realize that my cells are informed by all who came before me, the strong, the weak, the resourceful, the creative, the curious and curiouser still. People who lived and died here. Who likely never gave me a second thought; never imagined the children and children’s children who would come after them. And I am sure they would be amazed at our modern life and technology.

As different as life in the 21st century may be, some things are the same. Our common humanity, things like love and family, faith and a sense of awe in our natural surroundings are links that bind us all. I cannot imagine the impossible wonders that the future holds for those whose lives will sprout from my family tree years, centuries from now. Life is a gift that keeps on giving.

Have a great week!

Sunday’s Week in ReVerse – 2 September 2018

I AM FIERCE / i am terrified
well-spring of life, informing cells that make me, me
to those who dare dip from her shallow well
hum of longing, knowing, still
humble selflessness
a crown of crimson petals
the worst was yet to come
evil can’t sustain a never-ending terror reign
but her bitterest arch rival was, in fact, a Valkyrie
again I am surprised to find more royalty
reminds me I’m the sum of many parts
I guess it’s time to get down to business then
there’s a subtle shift
on the prowl, terrorizing
deep peace through the darkest of nights
life overcoming

Sunday’s Week in ReVerse – 26 August 2018

Weird ReVerse this week. I guess that’s what happens when you try to mix the present with the past, fire with ice, religion with politics. There’s a reason people don’t like to discuss the latter two.

As for religion, seeing all things through the lens of faith is a shaky premise to hang one’s hat on. Faith trusts in things unseen and in most cases unproven. We can get so caught up in the details and our differences that we forget the principles that are the best of religion. That’s my two cents’ worth.

And politics? Well it’s a beast. People like to keep their political allegiances secret. We cast our votes on “secret” ballots (that are number coded with our check-in ID#). Those so-called secret ballots are traceable back to you as sure as every search you make online adds to your electronic profile, ready for the picking by marketers and manipulators seeking to own your patronage and your allegiance.

It is true I am learning a lot about my ancestors this month. But it is also true that what I’m gleaning is a collection of notable bits and pieces of evidence that have lasted over time. In contrast, future generations will likely have access to troves of useless information to wade through if they are interested in knowing about me. A lot of information that amounts to nothing really. Mind blowing oblivion. I’m gonna end on that happy note. 🤣

Have a great week. I shall be bonding with a few of my grandchildren this week. Making memories…the only data worth sharing in this age of TMI.

Sunday’s Week in ReVerse – 26 August 2018

what mystery meld of genes informs my flesh and blood
the thunder, the storm,
one day i know i’ll be just a fleeting memory
days of rain
trouble tells me
good and fair and wise
while revolutionary battles raged, a great awakening time
requiem on a crumpled page
an eagle spread it’s massive wings,
the status quo’s nemesis
days spent keeping house and raising her large brood
ice and fire don’t mix anymore than church and state
the dark, velvet sky opened up its heart

Sunday’s Week in Reverse – 19 August 2018

Another week flew by. Work continues to be a bear, with relentless pressure from the top…must keep those shareholders happy. I don’t mind admitting that I have refreshed my resumé. Working at this current pace cannot be healthy, but I’m not sure any place else will be much different, or better. It’s part of the insanity of ‘merica, where the rich get richer and the poor die trying.

All this to say that, coupled with my dive into my ancestors this month, I am even more aware of how fleeting life is. I am growing less patient with willful ignorance and outright stupidity, less loyal to an employer who, for all their “go team” blather would replace me in a heartbeat without batting an eye…or not, and instead dole out my duties to the poor schmucks left behind to save money on payroll.

Despite all that, I am learning to live in the moment; to look for glimmers of hope and light. Does that surprise you? It shouldn’t. I am actually finding the perfect balance of zen and bad assness. It’s something I believe we need more of in these trying times.

Because I have news for you. The ugly, mean people don’t respond to kindness. They are getting meaner by the day, and we are so past the point of trying to understand why they’re so angry. They wear their anger like a badge of honor along with their red MAGA hats. If they give up their anger, what do they have? Only themselves to blame for the vile demagogues they’ve elected…but they’ll never admit it.

Nope…the best thing I can do is tolerate them, or not, I really don’t care if I offend them these days, and retreat to my corner when I need to breathe. I’m doing that more often these days and I’m thinking it’s not such a bad thing. Have a good week. I hope you take many good breaths this week. You deserve it. 😊

Sunday’s Week in ReVerse – 19 August 2018

tree strong, sure, with roots meandering deep
No one ever calls me Miss…
legacies to be recalled by generations hence
i understand
Damn full moon.
gruesome scene…they forced him in, until he burst!
a full life they all lived then to the nunnery they fled
legend has it, have you heard, so they say…
of cockles and shell shards; the sea
with no lick of lack
breaking free takes strength
forgotten? I think not! with these great monikers…
keeping an open heart
with the darkening
remembering things
live and die, no answer for the age-old question…”why?”

Sunday’s Week in ReVerse -12 August 2018

I’m sure there is a message somewhere in today’s ReVerse. In fact, I can feel it. Several of the verses are lifted out of my daily stanzas. This month I have chosen as my daily theme, the stories of my ancestors.

Fast forward to 2018. If one reads the lines below, taken out of context as a whole, applied to the present time, I think the lesson is clear, if not a bit cliché. “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” We have heard this saying over the years. It is coined to make a point, especially when things feel out of whack and off the progressive course, where leaving things better than we inherited them is being derailed by our worst selves. The quote is in fact attributed to George Santayana (16 December 1863 in Madrid, Spain – 26 September 1952 in Rome, Italy) who was a Spanish-born, philosopher, essayist, poet and novelist. He lived in America from the age of 8, though he never become a citizen, and established himself as an esteemed professor in the philosophy department of Harvard where he himself graduated. Never married, he return to Europe later in life. The quote above can be found on page 284 of “Reason in Common Sense” the first volume of five from his greatest work, “The Life of Reason”. In its entirety, it is “sometimes considered to be one of the most poetic and well-written works of philosophy in Western history.” (According to Wikipedia)

If we take an honest look ourselves in the mirror it is easy to see that we are doomed, so to speak for ignoring our history while at the same time clinging to an idealized version of it. Yes, a reread through the lifted lines from the past week’s work below makes it perfectly clear. Though we have sought to amuse ourselves by stumbling down into a rabbit hole, we are now discovering that it is, in fact, a black hole in disguise. We do seem to be imploding. So sad, but perhaps needed in order to set us back on track. Have a great week. I’ll leave you with this poem from George…

There may be Chaos still around the World

BY GEORGE SANTAYANA

There may be chaos still around the world,
This little world that in my thinking lies;
For mine own bosom is the paradise
Where all my life’s fair visions are unfurled.
Within my nature’s shell I slumber curled,
Unmindful of the changing outer skies,
Where now, perchance, some new-born Eros flies,
Or some old Cronos from his throne is hurled.
I heed them not; or if the subtle night
Haunt me with deities I never saw,
I soon mine eyelid’s drowsy curtain draw
To hide their myriad faces from my sight.
They threat in vain; the whirlwind cannot awe
A happy snow-flake dancing in the flaw.

Sunday’s Week in ReVerse -12 August 2018

around the time when separatists sought freedom
was his name, a roving love philanderer
we sipped tea here, from porcelain cups with pink roses
penned in history’s tomes the story of a clan
came on horseback through the town, they say, naked
some city folks pot bright flowers in their concrete spaces.
are we there yet
but what of peace…love
makes his bed, alive for centuries, not dead
hence ended by his bastard son, poor fellow
After days of sweltering heat, even the seashore was little relief to beach-goers…
cast time in shadows
rendezvous en rouge
that most of us will fade into obscurity…
she is not whispering
i have loved like a fool
