Sunday’s Week in Verse – 20 December 2015

snow

Happy Sunday! And happy weekend before Christmas! As I started lifting lines from this past week’s postings things could have taken a much darker turn mid-poem (thanks to Ronovan Writes Haiku challenge of opposites). I took the more positive lines, but the tone still had a bittersweet quality. I can’t help but think of all the family gatherings that will be taking place this week. It can be wonderful and it can also test our patience.

There is something about going home that has a way of transforming us into children, with all the wonderful as well as the baggage we carry with us throughout our lives.

What I wish for you…for all of us, this holiday season is gentle reconciliations, happy memories, love and peace. Each year it is our greatest hope. And each year we have the opportunity to witness a miracle. Yes, most of all, I wish you miracles.

Sunday’s Week in Verse – 20 December 2015

I didn’t get the memo…
They may be coming, but I don’t have to like it!
Like a beast to
the trough I sift
through the backwash
of drivel and banter.
Looks deceive.
A blooming beauty,
Charmed, I’m sure.
Enchanting view from afar
After all, they had each other.
In dreamy slumber we wait
splintering in ecstasy…
That’s how she would remember…
If not for promises of spring
I think I might need an intervention.
An adjective…not a question,
It had been a long day of waiting.

It had been a long day of waiting. Crumpled snack wrappers and empty soda cans cluttered the end tables already stacked with out-of-date magazines. Eventually everyone from both sides of our immediate families had gathered to welcome my first grandchild. There was another family waiting too, but we were a formidable crowd, laying claim to most of the available seating.

Finally word came that she was here! The excitement was palpable. When the next pink bundle was presented, we rushed the window to see her.

But something felt wrong. Not one of us felt warm and fuzzy about this baby.

“Who do you think she looks like?”

“I’m not sure. Her eyes look like…never mind. I thought maybe Uncle George, but he was an honorary uncle, dad’s best friend.”

“Her mouth sort of looks like…no…not really…hmmm…”

“She looks kinda weird if you ask me. Not like any of us.”

“Her face is too long. Who’s nose is that?”

I tapped on the glass to get the attention of the attending nurse, “The Jones’ baby? Is this the Jones’ baby?”

She nodded “yes”.

Clearly, she couldn’t hear me. I persisted, spelling out, “J.O.N.E.S? Mother’s name Terry? Dad’s name, Chris?”

The nurse paused. Finally comprehending, she mouthed, “No.”

Our entire entourage sighed loudly in relief. A few “thank god’s” we’re muttered. As we scattered back to our seats, I noticed the other family patiently waiting in the corner.

Smiling sheepishly I said, “I think this baby might be yours.”

Eudemonic – Friday’s Word of the Day Haiku

Eudemonic

Word of the Day from dictionary.com

Today’s word of the day from dictionary.com is another ancient, rarely used word, and when it is, it is found more in the realm of psychology and the study of positive thinking.

It originated in the early 19th century: from Greek eudaimonismos ‘system of happiness’, from eudaimōn ‘happy’, from eu ‘well’ + daimōn ‘guardian spirit’.  Though when I first saw the pronunciation of the word, I couldn’t help thinking it sounded like “street talk” for something like…”Hey…U demonic?!” At any rate the Eudemonic we are featuring today is an adjective…not a question! 🙂

Though I will admit that there are times when my level of euphoria over something can verge on the manic side. I blame it on being a Gemini. Just last night I was over the moon over discovering snowflakes on WordPress AND the fact that I could change their direction by moving my mouse left to right!!! : )   : )  😀 But…I digress.

Here’s my Haiku. Have a EUDEMONIC Weekend! 🙂

Those who are happy
live a eudemonic life
of true gratitude.

snowflakes

Okay…this is just a random thought. It’s late and I should probably be tucking myself in. But…I just discovered how to turn the snowflakes on. How cool is that?

So…guess what i’ve been doing for the last 5 minutes? 5 minutes is a long time when it’s late and I have work in the morning and dishes to load the in the dishwasher and dogs to take out for their potty break…but I digress.

Here I sit, scrolling my mouse from right to left…and left to right, because I discovered when I do that, the snowflakes fall in a new direction. There they go…left…now right…and…left again…and…you get the picture. Did I mention I caught myself doing this for 5 minutes?

I’d like to think I’m not the only one who got lured into doing this. So come on WordPress buddies…fess up. How many of you have done the same thing?

I think I might need an intervention.

Peace out…but only after I give the snowflakes a few more directional shifts…

Winter Blues

snow
We hide inside our homes to winter o’er these shorter days

And languish through the frigid cold ‘neath dreary skies of gray
If not for promises of spring
We might lose hope in everything
So wake me when the first bloom blooms…until then, go away!
