They say, “Pride comes before the fall.”

Pride…A Limerick
 spinachsmile
She prided herself queen of style
as she sauntered her way up the aisle
with all eyes on her now
she turned round for a bow
and presented a spinach-laced smile!

Inconnu: Friday’s Word of the Day Haiku Challenge

inconnu

Happy Friday to you! It’s time once again for Dictionary.com’s Word of the Day and my own personal challenge to come up with a Haiku using the word! Today’s “Inconnu” is an interesting word that seems, at first glance, to have a split personality, but I happened upon the history behind the mystery!

Dictionary.com’s definition for inconnu
  1. a person who is unknown; stranger.
  2. Also called sheefish. a game fish, Stenodusleucichthys, of fresh or brackish northern waters.

“inconnu originated in the early 1800’s and comes from the French term of the same spelling, which literally means “unknown.” It shares a Latin root with cognition defined as “the act or process of knowing.”

So…how did the French word “inconnu” come to be the alternate name of the Sheefish, a large, long-lived migratory salmon/whitefish/pike-like fish that lives near the Arctic Circle?

According to the Canada Department of Marine’s Annual Report, Volume 33 the story goes that French explorers to the Mackenzie River area were so puzzled by this odd fish that was a cross between a pike and a whitefish, that they called it the “don’t-know-what-fish” or the “undetermined fish”…hence the “Inconnu”… and the name stuck. It is also interesting to note that the Native Montagnais Indians of the area also called this fish “ouananiche”, translated to “the little what-is-it fish” or the “Little below-the-rapids pool fish.”

Such varied applications of this word definitely call for two Haiku! Have a great Weekend!

The white-gloved, dressed-blue Sentinels walk
twenty-one steps from end to end
so to honor those Unknown
who answered duty’s call
Anonymously
known but to God
their motives
ever
pure
now
entombed
eternally
atop a hill…
no widow’s goodbye
nor mother’s mournful cry
yet guarded hour to hour
a nation solemnly declares
none who die for freedom die in vain.

This verse was prompted by Jane Dougherty’s Poetry Challenge #5…the Nonet with the theme being “war in any of its forms, taken from any angle.”. A Nonet is 9 line verses with syllables: 9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1. As suggested I added a reverse Nonet as well.  If you’d like to read more Nonets or participate in this challenge click HERE.

Starbucks Cups…REALLY?

I don’t often do commentary on politics, religion or fashion (threw this last one in here to see if you were paying attention), but when I do, I like to look a the absurdity of the issues we seem to lose our minds over.  This week…it’s coffee cups. Next week…hide the babies and pull down the shade, it could be something as life-changing as placemats! At any rate, because so many people seem to be so worked up about this, I felt compelled to bring a bit humor into the discussion. I’m sure some folks may not find it humorous. Oh well, I did. So free speech and all, here is my Starbucks Meme. Happy Wednesday.
