Sunday’s Week in ReVerse – 21 January 2018

Today I am grateful.

I am grateful for the constancy of the sun by day and the moon by night; for the gentle cycling of the seasons; for cool breezes and refreshing rain; for all things green and living; for a heart that beats and for lungs that inhale and exhale without prompting.

Today I am grateful.

I am grateful for dog slobber on my clean, black trousers; for cat fur speckled sweaters; for the untidy remnants of animals and children at play; for the music of laughter and sweet whispers; for the smiles of strangers in long lines at the grocery store.

Today I am grateful.

No matter how crazy this world gets…with its threats of nuclear doom, terrorism, government shutdowns, lack of empathy, insanity, hate, rage…I know that all that matters is this moment, right here, right now. How grateful am I for its simplicity; for the gift of being here; for the blessing of words; for the keyboard in front of me that helps me pour them into this blog. And how grateful I am for you, reading this in your right now moment; grateful, so very grateful for the connection we share.

Peace, love and blessings to you. Go gently my friends…a moment in time is an eternity.

Sunday’s Week in ReVerse – 21 January 2018

it is barely a whisper,
words to inspire, to move
a hint of fragrance
sending the petals gently fluttering
good intentions fade
whining, wailing, trifling
silence
making up for lost time,
one right after the other
narcissist
tell it like it is…
captive to torture
we shall overcome
the dark world, always
the force is strong
the mind knows

A ReVerse poem is a summary poem with a single line lifted from each entry of a collection of work over a particular timeframe and re-penned in chronological order as a new poem. Unlike a collaborative poem, the ReVerse features the words of one writer, providing a glimpse into their thoughts over time. I use it as a review of the previous week.

Sunday’s Week in ReVerse – 14 January 2018

Sometimes when I finish pulling lines from the previous week’s posts I am drawn into the resulting ‘reVerse’, begging me to wrap myself in it…a moment of pure grace. I read the collage of snippets over and over savoring each word. I so needed this respite from the ugly discourse of recent days…oh, how I needed it!

I remember a time when we were taught manners, and admonished for not minding them. I remember when it was customary to say things like ‘please’ and ‘thank you’, ‘pardon’ or ‘excuse me’…when it was polite to offer someone a place ahead of you in line, when we dressed up for special occasions, when we valued education, our elders, and always told the truth…even if it hurt or was uncomfortable because lying was one of the most horrible things anyone could do. I remember when being a person of faith meant that you lived by a higher standard, loving mercy, doing justice, walking in compassion, serving the least.

Perhaps I’m just delusional and these memories aren’t real at all. Maybe these things are figments of my imagination…a utopia that existed in my closed, privileged, safe little world. I wish I had been more aware. I wonder why I was not. How did I miss it? Why am I surprised by the ugliness rumbling just beneath the surface and blaring at us now in broad daylight? It’s been this way for a while now.

It feels like one step forward, two steps back. It feels like when you’re trying to inconspicuously itch a scab but end up ripping it off and blood is everywhere and you try not to notice it and then act surprised after following the horrified gaze of onlookers to your bloody forearm. We’re told to leave scabs alone. To let them heal…but sometimes they itch! And sometimes it takes a long time for them to heal.

We’ve been scratching the surface of our deep wounds for several years now. But this time we knocked the scab off and we’re bleeding. It’s messy. If any good thing can be gleaned from this mess, it is that we finally see reality. More and more of us are waking up and stepping up to be counted. “Me too.” There is a new reality rumbling just under the surface. It might even be that utopian daydream I imagined. Or at least it could be. As for me, that’s what I’m hoping for and determined to make happen. Forgive me for not noticing before…but I think you are pretty spectacular and I think we can all do better and be better. If you’re not feeling it, just ask me. I’ll tell you. Better yet, let me show you.

Peace, love and light my loves…go gently.

Sunday’s Week in ReVerse – 14 January 2018

in the cellar…forgotten
crimson velvet frippery
those who are rooted deep
denying a dream
call it kismet; call it fate
but it was too late
always the day following a full moon
angels not devils
eternity of almost
deep is the water
it is time to dream
go gently my loves

Shi Sai Sunday’s Week in ReVerse – 7 January 2018

Well now…interesting week! I have my copy of “Fire and Fury” on order. I hadn’t originally considered purchasing it. I figured it contained revelations I already knew or that it at least confirmed what I’d suspected. And all the juicy parts would most certainly be revealed by cable news wonks ad nauseum. No, I bought my very own copy precisely because the “emperor with no clothes” tried to censor it. And because I wanted to be counted in the historic rush (I’m imagining it was historic) to say in no uncertain terms that this is America, and we do not ban books we don’t like, we don’t malign the press for reporting the truth, we don’t fire public servants who refuse to pledge allegiance to a dictator, we don’t build walls and isolate ourselves from the rest of the world, we believe in science, and freedom of religion and speech and expression…yes…Mr. “You’re Fired!” we READ, we are woke and stoked, and you are going down!

All this for the price of a book. What a bargain! How good it felt to buy it, simply because in my America, I can. And I am apparently not the only one. Yep, this is YUGE!

Stay warm, be encouraged, stay woke, my peeps. Have a great week!

the universe sings,
we’re gonna need backup
when faint hearts become fearless
embedded blood-deep
this yearly pressure has to stop
fresh-faced luna owns the sky
areas cordoned off so as not to disturb them
tick tock turncoats talk
if only they’d known
stars to wish on
soft clouds of air on the breeze
the world is flat

Shi Sai Sunday’s Week in ReVerse – 31 December 2017

It is just hours away from the turning of the wheel where I live. A new year waits in the wings promising blessings; birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, things to see, places to go, conversations to be had, dreams to realize, music, laughter, love, beauty…and poetry…let’s not forget poetry, and hugs, the more the better. 😊

Yeah, I know, 2017 was a challenging year. It brought out the worst in some of us, but… it also revealed the very best in us too. We spoke truth to lies, stood up for what is right, listened to and gave voice to the abused, offered safe havens for the refugees and the outcast, we cared, we voted. There is a certain momentum launching us into 2018. Can you feel it? I can! We have a clean slate upon which to write the next chapter of the story of us.

With 2017’s hours numbered, you’ll see no resolutions from me. But I will be taking advantage of this opportunity to close the door on 2017.

Let’s do this! Be audacious. Be blessed. Dream big. Live, love, laugh. Be you. Happy 2018!

Shi Sai Sunday’s Week in ReVerse – 31 December 2017

let us linger here
eight minutes was an eternity
alms mean nothing
through perspicacity’s eyes
“I” is an Illusion
circles, wheels, whirligigs,
their hearts aflutter
silence in darkness swelling
it is hopelessness
accustomed to glitz
an innocent trust
magic in ordinary
stone deep sweetness
crushed by life
when only a hug will do

Shi Sai Sunday’s Week in ReVerse – 24 December 2017

The streets in my town are unseasonably dark this year. Have you noticed it where you live? While there are a few pockets of twinkling lights dotting the neighborhood, most homes are dark. If I didn’t have a calendar I wouldn’t even know it’s Christmas.

We are all weary I think. Weary of bad news. Weary of lies. Weary of unchecked corruption. Weary of the growing divide between the haves and have-nots. Weary of not being heard. Weary of the darkness. We are so so weary.

So, it’s not a surprise that this year’s holiday season seems a lot more subdued and dispirited than years past. Our hearts are just not into it, all the flash and pomp and gaiety, but I don’t think that this is necessarily a bad thing.

Only empty cups can be filled. Rock bottoms make the best foundations. We need darkness to see the light. Half full or half empty means you have a glass to wonder about. Okay, okay, I’m stop with the clichés. But can you see what I’m getting at?

If you are struggling this year to find the light be encouraged my friends. The days are getting longer! Light is staging a grand coup! We are witness to the magnificent resilience and regeneration of Nature at her finest and reminded to surrender briefly to the dark. It cannot exist without the music and shimmer of the dawn. And love, well love’s dawning is the greatest gift of all this season of hopelessness and want. Remember seasons past and hold the truth of their steady cycling from light to dark to light again in your heart. It knows the way to the light. It knows.

Peace, love and light to you and yours.

Shi Sai Sunday’s Week in ReVerse – 24 December 2017

it is only a moment
flickering light dancing
raining down on us
silence the voices
the seething of consciousness
the souls who linger here whisper
I know what you’re going to say,
blessed peace, love and light
as he wields his crayon
dawn to dusk
I long only for the poetry
a moment’s sweet wish
