It was easy to find takers for an all-expense paid week at Constellation Resort, a true oasis retreat offering gourmet dining, daily massage and a variety of activities like golf, hiking and swimming.

While guests boarded the bus at the welcome center Mr. Incubus finalized details with his staff:

“Ensure that our guests feel like VIP’s. If requested, menu items may be substituted but only as indicated in the feeding protocol guide. Daily massages for guests are mandatory to ensure the tenderest meat. Apply coercive herd management techniques if necessary. Slaughter is scheduled as always at 0600 on Friday.”

Vincent’s Legacy – FFfAW Challenge

Vincent had invested years as an Aurelian devoted to the study of Lepidoptera. In lay terms, he was a butterfly chaser!

A rumor had sparked his latest quest to a remote village at the base of a mountain. Several locals had seen a strange looking butterfly frequenting the cliff-clinging, succulents nearby. It was a long treacherous climb to the summit but when he saw it, he knew.

“If only I could get a closer look,” he thought as he inched toward the edge.

Weeks later, search teams were only able to recover Vincent’s camera, his remains likely carried off by wild animals.

In those final moments he managed to capture the only photographed record of his greatest discovery…a most rare butterfly that would forever be known as the “Vicentius’ Praeda Fugacior Papilio.” (Vincent’s Elusive Butterfly)

“Not knowing what to expect, he made his way into the dark of the forest”. Time and the environment had all but eaten away what was once their clubhouse. Only a few boards dangled from the crook in the old tree.  But that wasn’t what he came for.

It had been thirty years since Joe had been home. News of Tom’s death brought him back to pay his respects and fulfill a promise. He found the spot and dug a shallow hole near the tree’s trunk. The box was still there, its contents intact. They had all made a pact as boys that when the time came, those left behind would send it with the first of them to go.

At the funeral parlor, before the casket was closed, Joe smiled as he placed the book on Tom’s chest… “A Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”.

“Mom?…Mom…”

Oh my God! Julie, is that you?…John…wake up! It’s Julie!!!  Are you alright? Where are you? …Julie?”

“Momma, I think I’m okay…I don’t know.  I don’t know how I got here. All I remember is being at the party. The sign outside says Wright’s Motel. Do you know where that is?”

“Oh Julie! That’s 50 miles from here! How in the world? Well never you mind.  Daddy is getting dressed.  He’s on his way to bring you home.”

“Mommy, I’m scared.”

“Just stay on the line.  We’ll talk until your daddy gets there.”

“Momma?!  Someone’s coming!!!!”

“Julie?… Julie!!!! Oh GOD!”

Living the Life…Monday’s Finish the Story

© 2015, Barbara W. Beacham

Now this is living the life of Riley.

Riley is a beast you know. For the lives of me I don’t know what the humans were thinking!

Since he arrived, our peaceful home has been utter chaos! He forages through my privy-box tossing litter every which way, eating whatever he finds. Disgusting! He leaves puddles, or worse, in the middle of the floor! And I am most distressed that he is not content to play with his own toys but must slobber and chew mine to bits!

And here’s the thing. Despite all of this, the humans have grown quite fond of him. I cannot have them loving him more than me!

So…I arranged a bit of a catastrophe on his behalf. The humans had no choice but to scold him and lock him in his kennel.

I rather like Riley’s posh bed. It suits me, don’t you think?
