Charlie always saved Mrs. Delaney’s delivery for the end of the day. He had picked up the courier job when his roommate moved across country. You might say he inherited Mrs. Delaney too.
She was a regular customer. Every week her son Gordon sent a short note and cash for essentials, special delivery. Charlie learned that if he delivered the package later in the afternoon, he might get an invite to dinner or at least a cup of hot cocoa and some home-made cookies.
Mrs. Delaney was full in interesting stories about the “way things were before all this technology mumbo jumbo” as she would say. Charlie didn’t have many friends in town. And Mrs. “D”? Well, most of her friends had passed on.
Some might consider them two of the lost invisible souls that so often go unnoticed in a big city. Though Charlie and Mrs. Delaney would never consider themselves lost…or invisible. After all, they had each other.

Seems like a wonderful addition to his life that he “inherited” from his friend — and to her life too. Very sweet.

I like this story Kat. It is great that Charlie and Mrs. D can be friends and have someone to talk to. Friends don’t always have to be in the same age group or have the same background. Friends can be of all ages and backgrounds. I think for Charlie that’s what makes Mrs. D such an interesting person to talk to. She’s experienced life and he hasn’t
Great writing.

Thanks Mandibelle. Some of my favorite conversations have been with my senior volunteers when I worked for a non-profit. Among them, a self confirmed Luddite who was content to stuff envelopes and not interested in computer work. 😊 so much wisdom!

This is such a nice story of two people helping each other and getting a lot out of the friendship. Each have their own reasons for few friends, and they found a common bond between them. I can relate to this story….I was in this type of situation when I lived in an unfamiliar town and my husband was deployed. My landlady was sort of like the lady described in this story…she was a widow, lonely, and we became very good friends. Sometimes when I came home from work, she would be waiting at the door and invited me in to her apartment to have dinner with her and we would spend an hour or so talking and laughing about various things. She was such a blessing to me.

I can relate to being a military wife. Those special neighbors were always a tremendous blessing to me, living away from family, alone with four small kids to raise! Thank you for sharing a part of your story JC. 😊
