I decided I needed to do a lighter take on the prompt for this week…so…here is take two. Same vantage point, but a very different story! 🙂
Joy had planned the perfect time and place to tell Pete the news. It was the happiest place she could think of. They had met for the first time on those high swings. Her seat buckle had gotten jammed and Pete helped free her after the ride had settled to the ground. That was 5 years ago. Since then, he had made her the happiest woman on earth. The only thing that would make their lives better would be this.
So…there in front of their special place she told him.
“We’re gonna have a baby!”

He lifted his hand to his brow as if it might somehow block her words.
“I want a divorce. I’m moving the kids to the coast this weekend so we’re settled before school starts. Please stay away from the house until we’re gone.”
She picked the most public place to tell him. But he couldn’t blame her. He was running out of promises and apologies. “I’m sorry” was not enough to bridge the breach of trust from his last outburst, and he knew it.
He also finally admitted that he needed help. One day he would thank her for leaving.

After months of daily rehearsals, herbal teetotaling and sour patch kid interventions, another opening night had arrived!
Judith waited in the wings, stage right, as the orchestra erupted into a cacophony of dissonant notes, fine tuning in preparation for the tap tap tap of the maestro’s baton on the dais. A rustling of programs and coughs finally settled into silence as the auditorium lights dimmed and blue filtered spots illuminated the stage.
The intro swelled, Judith’s cue to take her place at center stage…

The intro swelled..as the understudy (who had anticipated this moment) shoved past Judith, who stood frozen in place, heart pounding in her ears…
The show must always go on. But this night, it would go on without her.
