Having weathered first frost
A single rose droops full bloom
Petals precariously hanging
Nearby green leaves, dew hanging
drip warm from morning frost,
rousing dormant buds to bloom
But it will be too soon to bloom
summer’s last remnant hanging
will suffer winter’s brutal frost
How bittersweet when autumn’s frost lapses warm to taunt the rose to bloom with Winter set to snatch the fading petals left there hanging.

This poem is a Tritina in response to Jane Dougherty’s Poetry Challenge # 10. I am a day late in entering. The holidays and work have left me little time to write, but I so wanted to give this poem style a try. I chose the three words: Frost – Bloom – Hanging (inspired by the climbing rose bush in my front yard…roses are a faithful muse for me.) If you would like to read the other Tritinas you may hop over to Jane’s page by clicking HERE.

Lovely reminder that spring is on its way. Thanks for finding the time to experiment, Kat 🙂

Thanks Jane! It’s a lovely format. I was a bit intimidated at first, but it flows quite nicely from one stanza to the next. And I love the last line in summary. 🙂

I was very impressed by some of the entries, the way they managed to slip in that shift in the emphasis that gives the ending a slightly different meaning. Very clever stuff.

That will be my next goal. I’m afraid I didn’t shift quite enough at the end. Practice practice😊

I find that part hard too. Well nigh impossible, in fact. I admire those who manage it. It’s even harder in a triolet, if you’re looking for masochistic pleasures.

Where I live we are in the grips of cold, hard winter. Our first frost happened months ago! But I do love the poetry and imagery together.

It has been unseasonably warm in my corner of the world causing buds and plants to rise prematurely…but the cold is coming.

It so was PJ! And drenched to boot! I get so much inspiration from my little climbing roses! 😊
