the Boogie Man
the boogie man’s not lurking in
our bedroom closets, glowing red,
with dust bunnies, candy wrappers,
socks underneath our beds,
he doesn’t only strike at night despite
the tales you’ve read,
he certainly can’t read your mind
but there’s still cause for dread,
because you see it’s what you can’t
see holding you in fear,
it’s the unknown, that’s threatening
all that you hold dear
scary words like what if, I can’t
blaring between your ears
unconsciously you know him well
he’s right there in the mirror

For MindLoveMiserysMenagerie’s Sunday Writing Prompt: For this prompt I’d like you to focus on creating a portrait of the Boogie Man or some other supernatural being in a very concrete and descriptive way. What does this creature look like? Why does it do what it does? Is it evil or simply misunderstood?

Oh yes, I’ve seen him often!
Wonderful!

Oh My I LOVE LOVE LOVE this! That is so incredibly true. The scariest character and critic I’ve ever known stares back at me from that mirror every morning. And she bears and uncanny resemblance to my MOTHER! YIKES. Great poem. 😉

Isn’t that the truth! I still hear my parents’ voices in my head. It was years before I could leave a dish unwashed in the sink! And there are so many times I’d wished I’d have listened to my heart and gone to college to study journalism. Thanks JP. 🙂

I’ve been through all those negative thoughts too often.
Kicked ’em to the roadside. Blinding them all with positive power!
Yes, I agree… some dark soul spots can be labeled such. And sometimes it is only the individual that can allow light to enter.

Sometimes we need to change the recordings playing in our heads with new messages…at least that’s what a therapist once told me. 😉

I forget (really) how many times one is supposed to do something before it becomes a habit… 😉

I’ve heard it takes doing something daily for 30 days for it to become a habit.

They do not think it takes 21 days to form a habit. They believe it takes an average of 66 days to create a habit. This number trumps the conventional 21 days by more than 3 weeks—so the idea that it takes an average of 66 days may be a surprise to many.
(Isn’t Google wonderful? I know that is debatable…)
