“Why did I even bother stating “No flowers” in the obituary!”
“Flowers are pretty. And Red Ginger and Birds of Paradise were Nana’s favorites. I think it’s nice of people to remember her this way. What’s your issue with flowers!”
“Well first of all, they’re a waste of money. We were very clear. We said, “in lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Sunset Hospice. Why can’t people respect our wishes?!”
“I’m sorry. Why are you so upset?”
“Cut flowers die. I can’t bear to watch them fade, like Nana did. Take them somewhere…please!”
“So sorry. I get it.”

I can’t agree more… such a waste of money, they stink and then you are left with wilted flowers to throw away…

Exactly! It’s the what’s left that makes me sad all over again. My first experience with this was years ago when my dad died. So many rotting flowers! It was very depressing!

Absolutely perfect line of thought. It’s better to donate the money to a charity or hospices or orphanages. Good one, Kat

A few stories on a similar theme this week. The flowers are getting a tough time!

Interesting! I try not to read others until I have written my bit. Apparently I am not alone in my distaste for cut flowers. I like my flowers on the vine, rooted in soil. 😉

To each their own, I guess. I used to be a more practical sort but over time I’ve come to appreciate the aesthetic value of beauty in a sad time. But don’t keep the flowers after the funeral— give them away for others to enjoy.

Nice one. I like flowers in their right place only but then some earn their bread n butter by flower farming and selling them.

Oh, but the beauty of the flowers brighten up these sad moments. Don’t they?

Flowers are always lovely. I like potted flowering plants.

I wonder whether sending flowers to a funeral is actually very primitive. You know, like the pharaohs being buried with their most precious possessions. Is it in the hope that something beautiful can accompany our dear one into an afterlife, I wonder? What do others think?

That’s an interesting thought. Thanks for sharing. I think a lot of the things we do are steeped in tradition whether we realize it or not.😊

Never understood the “non-native” way of funerals with flowers and such. We always did something for the future generation like a scholarship, a charitable contribution, planting of trees at a park, etc.

We have this terrible trend of masses of flowers and toys being left at places of public tragedy, or fatal road accidents. Also mass hysteria is prevalent in various degrees. What an utter waste!

I especially hate looking at them after they have wilted. Makes me sad. 😢

I must be the odd person out, because I understand and like flowers at funerals, but when the family has different wishes, these have to be respected. Good story.

I do like some flowers. But as you said, family wishes should be respected. 🙂
