Please don’t bring me flowers
they won’t help me forget
they only bring sadness
you’d like me to forget
how you caused this sadness
love fades like plucked flowers
ripped from their roots, sadness
crushes lifeless flowers
of course they can’t forget
So take your dead flowers, forget me and leave me to my sadness.

This is in response to Jane Dougherty’s Poetry Challenge, to write a Tritina based on this gloomy painting. Jane suggested that we choose three words before starting our poem after looking at the painting. These are the words I chose:
1. Flowers
2. Forget
3. Sadness

Poignant poem! Reminds me of a haiku I once wrote, I want to go look for it now. 🙂 Beautiful wordsmithing Kat. Weaves a tale around the painting perfectly.

Thank you. I normally will do anything to avoid repeating words. But the form required it. I do like challenging myself. 🙂

Interesting point you make, Kat. Repetition is something we are told to avoid in prose, but in poetry, it can be effective. As here 🙂

Yes, a chorus or refrain in song as well helps the mind to churn around an image or thought. 🙂

O what is it that they’ say, ‘We must rise to the challenge.’ And you, your words have certainly done that. And more over, importantly, You are happy with your endeavor to have tried at all. 😉 Brava. (i really need to learn how to make the little smiley flowers here. :))

Thanks. It was the woman’s eyes that really got me. Not a happy camper!

Flowers as metaphor for regret, rather than hope… well done.

Thanks Ken. I never give cut flowers to the survivors at funerals. I always choose a dish garden or something living. ❤️

Thank you. Oh yes, definitely anger, bitterness and resolve. Been there, but once one faces it head on, then healing can happen. 🙂
