A Kyrielle Poem for Jane Dougherty’s Weekly Poetry Challenge using the words: Moonlight, tread, wary, secret, swaying and the photo below as inspiration.
Evening moonlight floods the pathway
swaying trees lean in shadow play
along the treaded road to home
each soul must journey here alone.
Once upon each new life dawning
wary travelers seek belonging
often forgetting what they know
each soul must journey here alone.
Days turn into weeks, months, years
decades spent in joy and in tears
some find life spent, nothing to show
each soul must journey here alone.
Still others with true joie de vivre
have no regrets come time to leave
they know the secret in their bones
each soul must journey here alone.
Soon, too soon lifeโs final chapter
turns the page to the hereafter
promising peace for all who roam
each soul must journey here alone.

I had done a Kyrielle Sonnet before, which is a 14 line poem consisting of three quatrains (same rhyme and refrain line pattern) ending in a two line couplet that repeats the first line and refrain line. I like that this one has no stanza limitations. ๐

It is very much like a psalm with the repeating refrain. I like this form very much. There is also a variation called a kyrielle sonnet. Shadow Poetry also has instructions on that form. http://www.shadowpoetry.com/resources/wip/kyriellesonnet.html

I like Kyrielles for the reason I see in your poem, that last line repeated in each stanza is so effective. In your poem, very haunting.

Thank you Mandi. I have also tried a kyrielle sonnet. A similar form. The repeating line can be very effective. Reminds me of the psalms.

Yes, it is very much like that. You’re right. I had a social studies teacher who constantly repeated info we needed to know. It was annoying at first but by test time we were amazed how much we could remember. So I think repetition in a teaching sense like in the Psalms, is very useful ๐

I love this so much Kat, and the picture is perfect. The poem is kind of melancholy yet so deep and true. xoxo
